Disposable income AFAIK is going down per person... in the 50s only the father had to work and could pay for everything including a vacation for a mother and 4 children. These days rent absorbs everything... in many countries both have to work, as one is paying the rent with his salary and the wife for food... If they are lucky they can pay for one child... thus the demographic problems.
You are wrong. Things people take for granted these days like access to the whole world with a smartphone in the 50s your father didn't have. They lived a cheaper life. Smartphone -> Luxury

My Great-Grandparents lived on a farm in a one room shack in northern Alberta back in the 1930s. The only thing they had for heat was a wood stove. They didn’t have much of anything to eat other than eggs for a number of years after getting married and giving birth to my grandfather. They couldn’t kill the chickens and eat the chickens because then, they wouldn’t have any eggs. My Great-Grandfather once told me when he was young, and they wanted to keep anything cold, they’d bury it in the ground because they didn’t have refrigerators until the 1950s.
People don’t understand how good they have it these days. Thank you, technology!
