Vlog #5 - Show Your City Challenge: American Boy in the Land Down Under

Last week I took a bit of a ride around Cairns City, Australia to get a better barring on the place that I am spending the next 2 months and finally I've edited this overview of my days journey for you to enjoy. Here are a few short facts about this coastal city tucked right on the edge of the UNESCO world heritage site of the Great Barrier Reef in the state of Far North Queensland.

  • The Cairns harbor is the focus of north Queensland’s fish and prawn industries, and tourism began modestly when marlin fishing became popular after World War II

  • With the “discovery” of the Great Barrier Reef in the 1970's and the appeal of the local climate, tourism snowballed in Cairns

  • Despite its beachfront esplanade, Cairns has a city atmosphere and instead of sandy beaches there are mudflats, abundant with native birdlife

I have been to Cairns It is Amazing that you found flying-foxes (the ones who looked like bats) in the downtown. In two years living and travelling downunder I have seen some of them only in the koala sanctuary in Brisbane.

They are literally all over the downtown area and when sunset comes they can be seen flying almost everywhere around the area. Pretty amazing animals and by far the largest I've seen. So are they not bats then? Would they be an entirely different species?? I know Australia has all sorts of crazy different animals so curious to learn more.

Thanks for your response Australia has a wide range of different species In my last post I show a sign found in the koala sanctuary about these kind of animals. When I was in Cairns I did not find any of them. Anyway thanks for sharing!
