How does the Steem blockchain work and why you HAVE TO KNOW THIS?

https://anon.steem.network (was down today, but have worked many times over the last 1,5 years, in case it is still down when you try it, then the only option I know for getting a Steem account, is Steemit.com or mining it into existence which requires a witness node and takes linux skills to do).
