Santa and Glovers Regiment

Here in historic Marblehead, MA history and tradition are an integral part of a Community

Marblehead is an old (by USA standards) fishing town that revere it's history. We have preserved homes from as far back as the mid 1600's, with placards stating the year built and who originally built them. This Harbor (Marblehead Harbor) has many an old forts and bunkers, General George Washington is even told to have started the US Navy here. Even the Holidays here are celebrated fully as an integral part of our history, culture and birthing of a nation.

Here is the yearly arrival of Santa at the town landing where he shakes the hands of all giving small prizes and candies to the children. Just after his arrival comes the arrival by wooden boat of the Glover Regiment.

The 14th Continental Regiment, also known as the Marblehead Regiment and Glover's Regiment, was raised as a Massachusetts militia regiment in 1775, and taken into the Continental Army establishment during the summer of 1775. When the Continental Army was reestablished for 1776, the regiment was redesignated the 14th Continental. Composed of seafaring men from the area around Marblehead, Massachusetts, it manned the boats during the New York and New Jersey campaign of 1776 and the crossing of the Delaware River before and after the Battle of Trenton. The men of the regiment were only enlisted for one and a half years, and the regiment was disbanded on December 31, 1776, in eastern Pennsylvania.

After the landings, complete with cannon fire, the town has it's annual Christmas Parade. This was preceeded the night before with the Marblehead Walk, where the community comes out and just walks about meeting friends and aquaintances, the shops and streets are lit up in festive lights and holiday trim, cumulating in the lighting of the tree and gathering.

But even after the parade and lighting of the tree, the town is bussling until the New Year is rung in. It is virtually a month long celebration in town andis an amazing sense of community.

May these traditions never die.
