La Sirenita, cuenta la historia de Ariel, una obstinada sirenita que sueña con conocer el mundo de los humanos. Pese a la prohibición de su padre, el rey Tritón, Ariel no pierde oportunidad para salir a curiosear cada vez que un barco se aproxima. Lo que fuera una quimera se convierte en una obsesión cuando Ariel se enamora de Erick, un príncipe al cual salva de ahogarse durante un naufragio.
Bajo el Mar, interpretada en la película de La Sirenita, es cantada por el cangrejo Sebastián, en forma de coro salen otros animales del mar como el pez Flounder, el caballito de mar, entre muchos otros.
El cangrejo Sebastián y otros animales del mar dirigen la canción a Ariel. En el momento que ella se pone en una roca a desalojar una flor pensando en si le quiere o no Eric. En la canción intentan hacerle entender a Ariel que no tiene nada que ver la vida en el mar con la de la tierra. Pero a pesar de lo que le digan todos los amigos de Ariel, ella quiere luchar por lo que quiere, que es volver a ver al príncipe Eric. Motivo por el cual es cantada esta canción en ese momento.
