DTube Exclusive Video #75: The Great Pacific Garbage Patch. WHY WE NEED TO RECYCLE.

in #dtube6 years ago (edited)

There is now a floating garbage patch that is 3x the size of France in the Pacific! THREE TIMES THE SIZE OF FRANCE! There is wildlife being suffocated by plastic bags and 6 pack rings, and marine biologists have found that up to 75% of sea turtle's diets is plastic microparticles.

Does this concern you? I sure hope so. Especially if you like snorkeling, want to have the chance to swim with dolphins, or want to take the trip of a lifetime to dive at the Great Barrier Reef. We already know that corals around the world are bleaching at unprecedented rates, and now this. We've left a patch of poisonous (plastic is extremely detrimental to the health of the oceans) waste in the very oceans that give us life.

Long story short: my challenge to you is to recycle at least the next 10 plastic products that you use and consume. 85% of the floating garbage patch is plastic, and much of this is hard plastic, which isn't going to biodegrade any time soon, if ever. And seriously, your commitment to recycling your next 10 plastic products can have such a huge impact if those don't end up in landfills, or worse, the ocean.

So let's take small steps (or large ones if you're ready) to improve the health of our planet, and keep our wildlife safe. Remember, it starts with each and every one of us making a conscious effort...so that those epic sea turtles, dolphins, manta rays (too many to name!) can have the clean and safe home that they deserve.

Hopefully this video will cheer you up a bit. There is a plan to clean it up.

Woahhh that’s epic! Thanks for sharing! Amazing how that system ends up following the plastic around because of the currents. Hope this works!

Yes, it is really amazing. Hopefully, awareness of the ocean liter changes how people dispose of trash and plastics in the future, so the problem doesn't reoccur.

I agree. We'll be out on the lake and pick up any floating bottles and cans we see...too bad we can't do that across the ocean. Because clean up is one huge step, but so is avoiding it happening again, like you mentioned.
