Hertfordshire Chicken Save is a peaceful movement inspired by the fantastic Toronto Pig Save. It is just one of the many UK movements in place.
The movement focuses on the idea of "bearing witness". This involves being with the animals in the trucks before they are taken into the slaughterhouse to be killed.
The hope is that we can gather lots of photos and video footage of these animals to spread far and wide. Essentially, we want people to "meet their meat" so that they can learn the truth about this exploitative industry.
If you do not feel comfortable actually bearing witness, please do come along anyway! It's always great to meet fellow animal lovers who share your passion, and it's very important to have lots of people at each event. You are always welcome to come along, hold signs and offer comfort to the people who do choose to bear witness as these times can be very intense and emotional. So even if you do not want to see the animals for whatever reason, please do come along anyway as more faces mean more reach for our vigils.
As always, please be polite and courteous to the truck drivers, the slaughterhouse workers and the police. As difficult as that can be, being respectful always pays off and we want to be as civil as possible, since creating conflict is going to make things worse in the long run. It's horrific to imagine that anyone could consider a career so lacking in compassion, but please remember that we were all pre vegans once. It's essential to remember that this is their job and the more polite we are, the more likely they are to work alongside us to keep our vigils safe and peaceful.
It is strongly recommended to bring plenty of suncream and water during the summer months, and to wrap up warmly during the winter months.
For these vigils, it is also recommended to bring latex gloves and hand wipes as the trucks themselves are covered in faeces, blood and urine. So it is very convenient if you're hoping to keep clean. It is also good to additionally bring nappy sacks so that we don't create rubbish!
Lots of vegan love. Stay safe, and see you there!
