One interesting thing to note is how intellectual property correlates to abrahimic religions. Judaism in particular.
The ancient jewish priests who wrote the ten commandments formulated the third commandment in a pretty curious way:
You shall not make wrongful use of the name of the Lord your God
That may all seem fine and dandy, but... how does one use a name in a "wrong" way? And why is it even important anyway?
But most importantly: how does one knows how to "properly" use the name of God, then?
Obviously, by asking for permission, right? But to whom shall you ask for permission?
Of course, not to God: if you could contact God directly, this whole situation wouldn't even exist in the first place.
The ones who get to decide who can and who cannot talk about God are the ones who created the prohibition: the priest class.
Therefore, by formulating the third commandment the way they did, the ancient jewish priests claimed exclusive ownership over the concept of God itself, giving themselves the right to punish (even with death) anyone who would use it without permission.
Which is a pretty big deal when you take into account that in Judaism God is considered utterly omnipotent, so much so that even figures who seem to oppose his plans (e.g. Satan) are actually stated to ultimately be controlled by him behind the scenes.
For example, in Ezekiel 4:12, "God" orders to "eat it as barley cakes, and thou shalt bake it with dung that cometh out of man, in their sight."
Yes, you read that right: he ordered people to, quite literally, eat their own shit.
In such a scenario, you can't say: "But God would never ask us to do that!", because you would be using the word "God" without permission. After all, who are you to be talking about God? Who gave you permission?
In fact, the Jews themselves can't even write the word "God". They write it like this: G-d. Or they use "euphemisms" like "HaShem", which literally means "that name".
While listening to this video, especially the sections detailing how even genes can now be considered "intellectual property", I couldn't help but think that the way the world is going resembles an awful lot the way the writers of the Bible lusted for Absolute Control over Humanity in the name of "God".
It also is featured in the Code of Hammurabi.
