Down Under Build day 3
Day three of the Down Under Build! Today I am working on the heat treating and then the clean up. There is alot of technical parts, but not too much video of it.
When it comes to the heat treating there are just a couple of parts. Normalizing, hardening and tempering.
Normalizing helps the steel to settle. To relax if you will from all of the different stresses that you put on it while working it. So when I am grinding it creates hot spots.
Then the hardening. This is the process that changes the size of the grains in the metal. It takes it from a softer workable metal to very hard and brittle.
After that is the tempering. This is a process of heating it back up...but just enough. So what it does is helps that brittleness go away. So now the knife is hard and durable...AND you can actually sharpen it.
Once that is all done I have to get it cleaned up. So there is a lot of sanding to do today. I hope you enjoy the process and the video!
