How To: Anneal The Steel
Today is a big day in the process of knife making. I am annealing the steal that I cut yesterday. There are many ways to acquire steel. There are alot of knife makers that buy the steel all ready to go, and then there are even blanks that are already shaped and just need sharpened and a handle put on. If I can, I prefer to find the steel and repurpose it.
There is something amazing about seeing something that it all rusted and gross, and then give it a new life with a new purpose. In it's old life it could have been some sort of a support strap, and in it's new life it will be a knife. Knives are hands down the most useful tool in history. In my opinion.
So today it is raining, but i have a shop!! So I headed out there just before I am writing this, and I got it all done. I fired up the forge and then heated all 7 pieces of steel that I had cut yesterday. I got it all in the wood ash insulation, and will check on it in a few days.

heat (metal or glass) and allow it to cool slowly, in order to remove internal stresses and toughen it.
I can't believe how smooth everything is coming together with all of this. I have been just working away on the farm, and the whole prepping for knives feels like it was just on autopilot. I can't believe that the next step after this is to actually create the blade!

Hubby and I have been watching Forged in Fire for years now, and it's by far one of our favorite shows even though neither of us have ever taken a hammer to steel...lol! You have a cool setup in your shop, and I can't even imagine what it used to be like to use your first wood fire forge. Thanks for sharing your annealing process and who knows - maybe some day I'll see you on television! 😊
I love that show, and everytime I mention what I do, everyone asks me if ive ever seen it haha.
Thank you. I love what I am doing and I am really excited about creating again. I am planning to start tomorrow! They should be cooled down and ready to go.
I'm sure they do...LOL! Not surprising the show is so popular - those guys are such cut-ups... 😉 😂

Yeah, I'll stop now. Wouldn't want to press my luck. 😝
Seriously, I could tell from the video how excited you are to be at the forge again, and I look forward to seeing your creations. Hope you're having an awesome weekend!
