Down Under Build day 5

in #dtube6 years ago (edited)

Today is the handle...only the handle. Sanding, sanding, sanding, and a bit more sanding haha. When I have a vision for what I would like something to become, it consumes me. I will stay at it until it resembles what I am looking for. I hate the idea of "good enough".

Today I am taking you all in the shop for the shaping of the handle. I start with the angle grinder and flap disc. Follow up with the dremel for some details. Finish up with sand paper and tung oil.

The angle grinder helps me to really tear off all of the excess handle material. It is a pretty quick process, so I have to use alot of control to not take off too much or take off the wrong stuff.

The dremel is for the details. When you have the two materials that meet on the spine and on the grip, you want the union to look flush. So all of the little dips and divots need to be sorted out for a clean finish.

With sanding I start with a 60 grit sand paper and move my way up to 1000. That way I can do alot of shaping, and then finish up with a nice oil sanding finish. I didn't video this whole part because it was a long time haha.

I am pretty disappointed though. I filmed another few minutes wrapping up what I had done to day so I could finished the video out.....and....there...was...no...sound....

I didn't find out that the clip didn't work until much later in the day, so the video might look like it just goes into nothing, but that isn't the case. I sand my butt off, mess with the cat, and really make some progress on this piece.

Tomorrow should be a clean up. I will clean up the handle and wipe it all down. I will also sand off any tape glue that got on the blade. Once I give it a nice sharp edge then it will be time for my makers mark. After that it is done.

Stay tuned for the wrap up and the reveal!

Be well

Sanding, sanding, sanding...Cat helps...Sanding, sanding...Coming together nicely. Can't way to see it, and cut something with it...After showing it off to everyone of course!

I am excited to get it to you. Getting a custom knife means you get the creators opinions and actions. So it isn't just a mass produced piece, and it is one of a kind!

Yep, one of a kind...Like me...Trust me, one of me is ample. :)

Evening Sir. I'd just like to say thank you for posting this series. I'm really enjoying seeing first hand how a knife is made and the way you present it, even a Luddite like me can understand. I'm really looking forward to seeing the finished product and your obvious passion for this craft shines through. I've resteemed this post too mate, cheers SkunkApe

Hey! Thanks for joining me here! Thank you fir the resteem. I really enjoy making videos and especially when it is tied ti something. I like giving the buyer the ability to be involved in the process. Whenever someone online orders I think I will do a video series for them as well.

No worries mate, I saw @Galenkp’s post with Yeti as the first word and had to read it the other day. I was a little sad it wasn’t about the Australian version of the Yeti the Yowie but knife making and finding you and your wives blog made it a really neat Steemit find. I look forward to seeing your future content and doing a series for the person whose knife you’re building would be a really individual selling point and a great idea.
