Last night I was on my balcony, watering flowers as every night during summer time. I looked up and saw the birds that were flying above me. I tried to figure out where they are going but after a few minutes of watching I came up with no explanation. Their action made no sense to me. I thought they were flying from point A to point B as it would be logical but wasn't the case. They were flying back and forth, circling around without any logic. That was when I realized how little I know about birds.

I remember my granddad when I was a small kid. He was able to predict a lot of things just by observing birds and nature in general and not because he had special abilities, but because he knew a lot about nature and animal behavior in general. Back in those days they didn't have a bunch of gadgets and services to predict what' going to happen the next day or in the near future. They only had the knowledge they inherited from their ancestors and what they could learned by observing. My grandfather could predict a storm, rain and even snow. I can't because I have learned very little from him, unfortunately.

Life has changed a lot since then, cities are more populated now and those who grew up in a city are likely to know these things about nature and animals. The wast majority has no idea as there's no occasion or place to learn. Green spaces are less and less, thus birds are less or non existent. Pollution is raising to dangerous levels.

I'm lucky to live in an area where there are parks and plenty of green space. These birds are circling above our head on a daily bases because there's green space for them to exist. My guests are often amazed by the presence of these birds as they don't have them at home. I do because I'm lucky. Yet not everyone thinks like that.

A couple of months ago while taking care of some community business I was approached by the neighborhood administration with a petition that needed to be signed in order to be handed in to the authorities. They were asking authorities to do something about these birds because they are making a mess.

Let me tell you a few words about these birds. I believe these are crows and there are a lot around here. If you look at the video, you can see for yourself. I don't know where they are based, they come every morning after 5 am am and if the window is open, the noise they make wakes me up. Then they disappear for the day and come back at the evening again, making the same noise. Yet I'm not annoyed by them even though they are waking me up often. Crows are known to be very smart.

American crows can be harmful to crops, but they also may prevent damage by eating insect pests, according to the ADW. Recent studies have shown that 60 to 90 percent of insects eaten by rooks are agricultural pests. source

Birds are part of our ecosystem and we need to protect them. The mess they are making can be cleaned up easily, all you need is a bit of water and a brush. Chasing away these crows will be really hard.
