This video is of one of the State Championship matches.

Charlie featured here several times (Links below), has continued her journey into combat sports, Already a world champion in Jiu-Jitsu, now a state champion wrestler! I have said it several times this young lady had Olympic champion in her future.
If you ever meet this young lady outside of the gym, you would never guess that she was a world champion, she looks like the average adorable girl. Looks can be deceiving, this young lady is a power house, easily besting boy athletes in running, push-ups, jumping, etc. Charlie does not just train wrestling and Jiu-Jitsu, but she also trains like a world class athlete. No doubt Charlie has the full support of her family, her parents cart her to training sometimes two times a day all while balancing their careers and lives. It is a lot of work for busy parents but it is well worth it to see the results. I asked her father "What is it that makes her so successful"? to which he very simply stated "Charlie puts the mat time in and trains hard". She sure does and it shows! Many people train hard or claim to. Training hard is a relative term, it does not mean the same to everyone. Training hard can fall on any side of the spectrum. It can be someone just shows up for a training session, or it can be someone who needs assistance to get into the car after their workout because there legs feel like jello. Charlie is a really hard worker, obviously she is not being carried away from the gym, but she definitely leaves it all on the mats.
I have been watching her matches for some time now and a few things that stand out to me (besides her work ethic while training), in my opinion that are a huge part of her success are the following.

  • Charlie listens to her coach. If you watch this 55 seconds in her coach tells her to let him up, knowing that she would take him down easily and score again. As a competitor myself I know it is hard to listen to your coach, especially when they are calling for letting your opponent up it is much easier to stay on top then it is to score a take-down. Having the presence of mind to listen to your coach is big to begin with, but to act upon their call is even bigger.
  • Charlie stays focused. It might sound like a no brainer to focus on the match while being in the match, but so many competitors struggle with this, especially younger athletes. Charlie keeps her focus on her opponent and the only time she looks away is when she is in a dominant position and her coach is giving her instructions.
  • Fearlessness. This may sound cliché, because how can people who volunteer to compete in combat sports be afraid? Well it is not what you think. The best way I can explain it is if you look at about 12 seconds into the match you can see the boy is turning his head and squinting. The boy is not afraid to wrestle, but he is afraid to get poked in the eyes, this is a very rational fear and it does happen yet you do not see this kind of fear from Charlie, that is the fearlessness I spoke of. Those mili-seconds that a competitor closes their eyes or turns there head can be the instant that costs them the match.
  • Deception. To quote Sun Tsu "“All warfare is based on deception...", Obviously a wrestling match is not warfare, but this still applies. If you look at the most basic move in wrestling, a double leg take-down, what makes it successful? Speed, power, technique all obviously contribute but how does one succeed in hitting a double-leg against another athlete who is has trained hard to not be taken down? The answer of course is deception. Charlie is young but even at this early age her game is very developed, she fakes so well before she attacks and that is how Charlie utilizes deception wins matches.
  • Relentlessness. Charlie is always looking to finish, she is always breaking down her opponents. She moves in right away, puts her opponent under a ton of pressure then breaks their will.
  • Mental fortitude. Unlike many competitors, Charlie stays cool even in the worst situations and this is one of the most substantial qualities of a champion.

Past Articles.

Charlie is not stopping here, the future looks bright for this young lady. Congratulations on this huge victory and we look forward to seeing what comes next!

Please leave some encouraging words for this young champion below!
