Dash was originally named darkcoin but changed its name in 2015 to appeal to more people. It's a cryptocurrency that is based bitcoin only it has much lower fees, faster confirmation times, and the ability to scale. Why someone would name a coin after the kardashians sisters clothing stores or a terrorist organization is not for me to answer but maybe it was to make much more difficult to google information thus increasing the privacy.

How is Dash different from bitcoin?
