I guess becoming desensitized to reality goes hand in hand, maybe as a means of instinctual self-protection against feeling powerless, overwhelmed and depressed about the things that go on?!
It's tough to keep a balance and not drift too far off into either direction, becoming either completely demobilized by, or totally indifferent to this reality.
