11 Jan 1983 on a cold winter night nancy Cruzan left work for the final time
as she was driving home and crashed her vehicle paramedics rushed to the scene and they found her lifeless with no vital signs they were, however, able to restore her breathing impulse she remained in the coma for weeks as she emerged from a coma and opened her eyes she exhibited no sign of awareness
doctors diagnosed her in a vegetative state after 4 long years of waiting and hoping her parents decided to remove the feeding tube that was keeping her alive, they did not want her daughter to live in this way, after having a court battle her feeding was removed
after 11 days nancy passed away

let's get back to history first
in 1768 the first edition of the Encyclopedia Britannica defines death as the removal of the soul from the body which is scientifically very unsatisfying
fast forward to 20th-century death was considered when death is the absence of blood flow and seizing other vital functions and that is referred to cardiopulmonary death
and till the 1970s it's the definition of death
but after that, we entered an era where ventilator can keep the heart pumping and the lungs breathing
now we need a new definition of what defines a death
Enter to the uniform determination of Death Act of1981
- death is now defined as irreversible functions of the heart and lungs
2.irreversiable stoppage of all brain function including the brain stem brain death by definition is death interestingly other organs may be functioning
-the patient must not have any voluntary movement
-any movement that is controlled by the brain must be upset
-brain stem that controls heart rate
checking pupil and these reflexes if found than brain death is no longer considered
there are many cases when a cold body is appearing to be a death but coming back to life when warm
there are 38 recorded cases in the medical history since 1982 people coming back to life after being declared dead
the problem is You're dead when a doctor says you're dead
