Learn to play Boogie Woogie!

Boogie Woogie is a style of blue piano music that people love to listen to. Listen to the different boogie woogie sounds in this audio. They are mainly made by the left hand to show you the different way you can create playful boogie woogie sounds. You can hear a driving pattern of repeating 8th notes played in ostinato bass style.

As you listen carefully, Boogie Woogie is a heavily percussive style of blues piano in which the right hand plays riffs
either with syncopated notes or with repeating phrases.

This style of music began at the beginning of the 20th century known as the “Western rolling blues.”

Go to your keyboard and follow along the rhythm by playing different chords.

Practice

  1. Use the 12 bar blues pattern to create the chord progression

  2. Use the Left Hand to create the rhythm

  3. For the Right Hand, you can create riffs using notes of the chords

  4. For the Right Hand, you can also use passing notes that are not in the chords. But you must play them quickly.

  5. Remember to SWING. If you don't swing in boogie woogie, it doesn't sound right.

  6. If you cannot coordinate both hands, play only with your Left Hand to make your sounds swing

  7. And then let your Right Hand come in on any beat and see what happens.

Some Piano Tips:

If you are able to follow the above 7 steps, you are actually doing quite well and reaching the goal to play boogie woogie.

Don't forget that with blues lessons, it is all about improvising.

Do not depend on music score when yo play the boogie woogie. It only slows you down. It stops your creativity.

The Trick is always keep your Left Hand going and moving in rhythm. And then let you right hand to come in improvising different notes. This is the freedom that your left hand has. The Left Hand plays a structure constant rhythm to keep the music going.

As you become more confident, your right hand can create music lines that we call riffs. You can hit them in any rhythm. You can hit the same notes all the time. Just by varying the rhythm gives you different music.

This is how I do it.

Try this and let me know how it goes.

Have fun,
Rosa

Hmm. do not forget to visit me. I post very important affairs and also fun.

My favourite piano music. In fact, the sole reason I decided to finally buy myself a piano and take lessons two years ago! It's hard to learn something new physically over 40 but the benefits surely outway all the struggle :-)

Play chord style piano and you will improve very quickly. Boogie woogie is all about playing chords on both Left Hand with some distinct syncopated rhythm.
