Storytellers [01] - Donkey Hot
Happy Friday Peoples of Steemit!
I am toying around with different ideas on how to add more value to our beloved STEEM blockchain, and I have decided to choose certain songs of mine that were inspired by or encapsulate an interesting (or funny, in this case) story from my life. The song I chose for this post is called “Donkey Hot,” and the story behind this song and what inspired the name will hopefully give you some chuckles.
Last June/July I took my second trip to Mexico, to Quintana Roo in particular. I have blogged about this journey and will link to those posts for anyone interested in reading about that and seeing cool photos of the Mayan temples and Cenotes. I went with my girlfriend of the time, and it was one of the best experiences I ever had. I highly suggest getting out of your country sometime and experiencing other cultures. It is so eye opening.
Anyways, during the trip we ended up camping out in Tulum, at one of their Cenotes (Cenotes are vast underwater caverns that link to each other and to the ocean, located throughout Q. Roo and the Yucatan peninsula of Mexico.). I’m used to Colorado camping, so it was funny to me how many amenities this spot had, given it’s location in the jungle. This place was tucked away in between some tourist resorts but had a little kitchen, yoga room, eco-bathrooms and even WIFI lol. The little shacks were basically just frames with screens to keep the insects out, but it was relatively luxurious for camping. There were already tents setup with air mattresses, even!
There weren’t any Americans there, but there were some Spaniards, a Frenchman, some people from South America and Mexicans. Everyone was much more fluent in Spanish, but because I was only really able to converse in English, everyone accommodated me and spoke in English too (Most of the time. Hard to always remember to do that). Anyways, we were all chatting, and the conversation transitioned over to Spanish for a bit, and I tried my best to keep up. They were all talking about something I couldn’t put my finger on, but for some reason I thought that they kept saying “Donkey Hot.” Dafuq is “Donkey Hot?!” I thought to myself. Is that some kind of hot sauce or something? It must be. Let’s go with that.
Anyways, one of the guys turns to me, since I had a smartphone with battery life, and asks me to look up “Donkey Hot…….” so I turn to my phone and type “Donkey Hot.” Nothing pulls up. I go to him, handing him my phone, and say “I don’t think I’m spelling it correctly.” The mistake I made was I should’ve erased what I had typed before I handed it to my buddy. Soon as he got my phone, he burst out in an uncontrollable laugh! He then starts speaking Spanish to the others and hands my phone to everyone in the circle, and one by one, what I had typed was making everyone crack up hysterically.
What did I do?!?! What was so funny?!
As it turns out, they weren’t saying “Donkey Hot.” Not at all. Not even close. What I heard as “Donkey Hot,” was actually “Don Quixote” (pronounced Don Key-ho-tay), which is a world famous Spanish novel. Soon as I learned what they were actually saying, I couldn’t help but start cracking up myself. We were all almost in tears. I think it’s important to be able to laugh at yourself, and even though I was pretty embarrassed, it was a great experience and helped fine tune my ear for Spanish!
When I got back from this trip, I was inspired to write a few songs that reminded me of the experience. This was one of them. It’s got a happy go lucky, quirky feel to it. I sampled some audio from a Don Quixote movie that you hear in the background, and also played my bass guitar for the bass part. There’s some random effect-y type sounds from my synthesizer that add to the carefree feel of the song. It was a funny, goofy, memorable experience, and that’s what I wanted for the song.
I hope you got a laugh from my embarrassing experience, and enjoy the song as well! Let me know what you think :)
