MOONCANS - Trk 3: Compacted Steel EP by DRUMOPERATOR (electro / modular synth / live drums)

in #dsound7 years ago (edited)

Today I am sharing "Mooncans" from the DRUMOPERATOR Negative Impact release Compacted Steel. This track began its life as a live drumbeat and modular groove I was streaming for hours on my ill-fated, now deceased Twitch stream (off to DLive with any future ill-advised livestreams!) The modular component involves a pair of Intelijel Dixie II oscillators in saw mode, slightly detuned against each other and feeding my beast of a stereo filter, the WMD Micro Hadron Collider. For those interested in the nuance between filters in eurorack world, this one falls on the more aggressive side of things at high resonance but is pleasantly (almost strangely so) mellow at lower settings. The arpeggio that drifts in at the top is testament to this filter's versatility. For examples of it not being versatile and blasting sounds into distortion realms true to its incredibly badass name, see every other track I've posted so far.

I tracked the beat in my acoustically dead control room … and it is straight riffin on Jaki Liebezeit, the drummer of Can. If you dig the layered polyrhythmic, but slaved to a clock sort of feel that this track has, I cannot recommend more enthusiastically a deep dive into Can world. Some time was invested in guitars on this track, which I remember being a really intensely cumbersome process. In the end I'm actually pretty happy with the timbres I got out of guitar world, mostly thanks to the incredibly lush and generally helpful EQD Avalanche Run.
