"RIVULET" Remastered - Trk 8: American Modular by DRUMOPERATOR

in #dsound6 years ago (edited)

Anyone who has been following my synth explorations on here knows I am predisposed to the incorporation of natural sounds, captured ambiently at time of performance and shipped through a chain on the modular to receive cohesion boosting modulation in time with the rest of the system. Unlike my harrowing engagement with Boston traffic (made epic via Erbeverb hyjinx), this piece works soft rain off a Kentucky porch into a percussive accompaniment for some sweeping Mangrove pads and the Mutable Instruments Plaits twinkling away in resonator mode.

This piece was quite fun to capture, albeit it slightly stressful as working in wet environments is not the modular's strong suit. Mastering it was another story entirely. Music of this sort of ambient twinkling nature is intensely difficult to get right, low-mid frequencies most specifically, with headphones. Hearing this on my Barefoots at home, I was able to bring out the dripping, wet upper mid range without sucking all the richness out of the mix ... in about a quarter of the time. In conclusion, mastering on headphones is horrible.

Great track! I can't wait to get posting on @dsound!

That was my first real sampler. I had an MKS-100 before that but it was junk. Is that yours? 13 bit sound!

Your attention to detail always impresses me. Right on!

Mastering or mixing on headphones is dreadful for me. Gonna listen to your music with my headphones, ahah, the only thing beside djing, I enjoy doing with them. Tnx for the share.

I have a number of headphones I think are completely amazing for tracking, but start trying to make actual decisions about frequencies in a mix and I end up shocked with how horrible I am at making things translate.

This sounds great listening on headphones. Through necessity of life I mix alot on headphones. Love my Sony Mdr7510's as that have really flat response. What do you usually use?

I've got the second tier Grados and they are incredibly pleasurable to listen to... just not dialed in enough or neutral enough for mixin.

For those decisions our ears need space, and our body needs to feel the frequencies. What do you mean with tracking? English it's not my native language and I don't understand some concepts :)

Tracking as in the recording instruments phase vs mixing being the putting everything together phase.

this is really good mate, great production. very atmospheric

Thank you new friend! Don't know how I had missed your page till today.
