Darkest of Nights - Mash Up - Hans Zimmer, Corey Taylor, Vinnie Paz (FREE DOWNLOAD)
Recently, as in over the last two years or so, I've been experimenting (non-sexually) with remixes and mash-ups in an effort to challenge my creative muscles.
I've focused mainly on trying to synergise multiple themes and genres in to one solid and clearly defined message, effectively making the piece stand alone in terms of it's interpretation. Thus, making it appear to be an actual mix between the contributing artists, when it truth, it's just me in my boxer's dicking around with a mouse and keyboard. :D
I digress, the point is: I wanted to make it look and feel like a real crossover, not just a random mash-up of contrasting shit. So the plan was...
STEP ONE - Define a message/theme/topic.
STEP TWO - Choose elements to play with.
STEP THREE - Combine the elements to accurately convey the message and try not to fuck it up this time. Thanks.
Step One - was easy. This was based almost exclusively on the access to ingredients I had. With the ingredients, I could easily pick a topic and theme. In this case: The mind of a murderer who is looking for ways to justify his horrid acts. Deep. Lol.
Step Two - Sometimes less is more. Based on my ingredients from earlier, I sliced out the fat and reduced them. I wanted the three chosen genres to stand strong enough apart to be recoginizable and yet still gel with each other. Like a gathering of unwilling parents at a small child's birthday party. So, reducing my sample usage and focusing in on the ones that worked was more effective, producing a cleaner and tighter track. I think. I hope.
Elements that were chosen at the choosening of choosiness:
Hans Zimmer, The Dark Knight Theme - Known for a whole shit ton of the greatest and highly memorable film scores, The Zimmer is one of my all-time favorite composers and influencers. And this is one of my favorite scores. Dope shit. Check it out in it's entirety at some point. This provided the dark, suspenseful and intense bed for the mood of the track.
Slipknot, Before I Forget - Also one of the most inspiring things in my life, Slipknot and it's lead psychopath and genius: Corey Taylor. His vocals provided a needed break in the patterns and a chorus as well as backing track that supported the on-going theme. Something for chorus junkie's to sing along to in the car.
Vinnie Paz, Drag You To Hell - This shit. This shit right the fuck here. I love Vinnie Paz. He provided the rugged and rough delivery as well the lyrical murderous ass content. AKA The soul of the track. Though, Vinnie is capable of much more intelligent and relevant lyrics, I love his brutal shit like this. No one, imho, spits a threatening bar as convincingly as Vinnie Paz does. Def check him and his many awesome friends out.
And there we have it: film scores, heavy-fucking-metal and good old fashioned murder-death-kill-gangsta rap. A delightful recipe fit only for the likes of Gordon Ramsay.... and me.
Step Three - this I can't really elaborate too much on. You see, in true Doc fashion, this was also a rushed project. It was thought of and completed in about 8 hours or something like that. Also, if I were to start going in to the details of how I assembled these pieces together I'd be writing this post til next fucking year. I ain't got that kinda time: I'm far too busy being delicious. Nyahahahahahahahaha.
Ahem - So.... here's the final mash-up for your perusal. Let me know if I came close to the goal that I set out to achieve. I really hope you enjoy this one as much as I did mashing it together. I'm really proud of this fucker.
