A Song I Wrote For Yoko Ono

in #dsound6 years ago (edited)

Yoko Ono is a fascinating figure as an artist, feminist, consciousness-explorer and cultural icon.

Her work asks us to step out of the comforts of our bourgeois value system and remember what it means to be a true human being with infinite possibility.

The story goes that John Lennon first met Yoko at an art exhibit she had in 1966. John says he was intrigued by one piece that was "a ladder which led to a painting which was hung on the ceiling. It looked like a black canvas with a chain with a spyglass hanging on the end of it. This was near the door when you went in. I climbed the ladder, you look through the spyglass and in tiny little letters it says 'yes'. So it was positive. I felt relieved. It's a great relief when you get up the ladder and you look through the spyglass and it doesn't say 'no' or 'fuck you' or something, it said 'yes'. "

YES! That is the belief at the core of Yoko Ono's work. The hatred and vitriol that was directed at her when her and John got together was not only misogynistic, but also racist and culturally elitist. White pop culture could not comprehend that their "golden boy" Lennon had fallen for a powerful, confrontational Asian woman who didn't ascribe to their value system.

Her contrary nature is actually deeply spiritual. I highly recommend checking out her book GRAPEFRUIT when you have the chance, and gently blow your own mind. I like to open this with my daughter and consider the instructions....

"Take a tape of the sound of snow falling"

"Walk all over the city with an empty baby carriage"

"Imagine one thousand suns in the sky at the same time".

It is my belief that this type of abstract, feminine, poetic thinking holds part of the answer to our current internal and social conflicts. Yoko has always invited us to think bigger, more sensitively, and to remember our connection to each other and to this planet.

Here is my song for Yoko Ono.

A little story. Many years ago while working at London Heathrow I was told to meet Yoko Ono off the incoming BA004 Concorde flight from NYC into Terminal 4. About 2 hours before the flight touched down I was in a different terminal (Terminal 1) and there was a record shop there - Tower Records. Just as I walked in, the piped music changed and what randomly came on? Imagine by John and Yoko Ono. I nearly freaked out. I knew at that point that I was being told to look after her well... !!!

Wow cool story! Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for the nice song and making me more aware of Yoko and what she stood for!

A seriously underrated artist!

Excellent song! And thanks for sharing the info about Yoko Ono, I did not know she was so interesting. I'll have to check out her book.

Love your song Ben :) I remember I first heard Yoko's music and read about performance art work for the first time when I was 10. Seriously stretched my mind as to the neverending possibilities of creative work 💜
Thanks for rhe fun memory ride and cool song x

Absolutely. She is one of those artist that when you "get" her, its a game changer! I remember being on mushrooms at Sean Lennons house at 18 years old and he played me her music. I got it! :)

Love the song. I once met Yoko Ono, who was hanging out with Clint Eastwood of all people, at La Scalas in Beverly Hills. It was a bit surreal.

Great song @benleemusic and I enjoy you don't hold back with your lyrics. To be honest I've been very mislead as to what to believe about Yoko. I've never really known much about her but in general just heard things about being a gold-digger, breaking up Te Beatles etc. I will definitely look more into her life and her book sounds very interesting. Thanks for a great song :)
