matt sokol - drum 3s vs 7x6 5x6 [DRUM13]

in #drums8 years ago (edited)

Drums are back! At least in this early padded up version of my kit lol, with which I am making radical forwards progress every day. Exploring linear patterns, polyrhythms, and how to find the most energetic and primal beats ever for live performance.

Here's a polyrhythmic concept I am chewing on, pushing 5s and 7s against a steady 3-based pattern in the kick/tom (see main video).

AFTER WATCHING:

STEEM EXCLUSIVE -- BEAT BREAKDOWN

Here's how this breaks down: The title of the post may appear to be gibberish, but it makes sense if you look at it right: Drum 3s (patterns of three notes) versus 7x6 (a snare hit every 7th note, 6 times) and then 5x6 (a snare hit every 5th note, 6 times). Thus it adds up to a six measure pattern that while kinda mind-bending could IMO be turned into a "catchy" progressive riff or something with the right composition/arranging treatment.

Here's a visual sheet music look at the groove (ignore accents):

I can feel a lot of potential in this idea so I will probably continue exploring it. Polyrhythms are an awesome area of music that I dont think we have come close to exploring fully - bands like Meshuggah are just the beginning, I think genres far beyond metal can write amazing songs by utilizing polyrhythms.

You take a polyrhythm, you give it a twist, throw some chords on it and a bit of melody, you might end up with something brand new and beautiful. Many songs await this method, at least I hope so cuz I'm gonna keep exploring it.

Anyway that is the idea, thus ends this video's steem blockchain exclusive drum breakdown.

sounds complicated, but you're doing it well!

Yup it is a little bit on the complicated nerdy side for sure, thank you for listening

Dope rhythm mang

Vote each other up, that's what you are here for. That's how you make money with d.tube. ;)

what? I dont fuck with vote trades

Three words for you re: this setup and this beat:

Stand up drums.

Just played with this band from Berlin called Camera and the dude basically did a motorik krautrock version of this for an hour and I was enraptured haha.

oouch!
that's sick man!
I rarely do those kind of poly, they rarely intertwine musically with other four or eight note music.
but this is a really interesting practice, I like the feel of it.
I don't know what's better, to try to feel the left hand as an independent limb and get in the pulse, or go note by note and follow the pattern (which is fucked up when you switch the rate of the snare).
Anyways, as soon as I finish the mixes, I'll finally get onto some drums, so we'll have some fun! ;)

Oh! And I feel so happy with the fact that there is one maniac in the world that's always working on those kind of beats and permutations, and thus keeping the poly-rhythmic world in peace and harmony. :D
