"Life is Astonishing"
Why settle for the ordinary when you are swimming in the extra-ordinary?
Who says that life is just random and not part of some grand-scale, beautiful, collaborative, orchestral melody?
When you were young, you probably used to view the world with a wide-eyed wonderment - a magical place for the imagination where anything could happen and often did. It wasn't necessary to pull the experience apart with logic in order to believe in the extra-ordinary and you were free to share to your heart's content without anticipating its unbelievability. Because as a child, anything was possible and all experience was new. Your life was an empty canvas in the process of painting itself.
However, as with most of us, with the advent of looming adulthood, you probably learned that this part of life belonged in a carefully contained little box. You may have even put this part of your life away for good - never to re-visit - trading the 'extra-ordinary' for the 'ordinary' as a means to.....well, become ordinary. Your brain became the filing cabinet of organized labels and the master of editing what's useful and non-useful. And somehow the novelty of life wears off.
This is a normal process of life. However, it can affect the way we see the world and how we feel about our world and experiences. It's a phenomenon called, "Hedonic Adaptation". When we stop trying new things or stepping outside of our comfort zone (whether mentally or physically), we naturally fall into habitual stagnation. You can liken it to the happiness you feel having a truly delicious treat for the first time and then on your second or third experience, you no longer get the same heightened feeling about it as you did that first time. The thrill is gone.......

However, these new experiences seem to expand our perceptual limits the most. We are meant to have these experiences in our life in order to continually evolve and grow - to reach newer and more amazing levels of achievement and creativity. Indeed, to literally outgrow the old model of who we were or perhaps even to assimilate the beauty and wonder that we are swimming in so that we can comprehend the astonishing possibilities we are yet to embrace.
“To see a world in a grain of sand
And a heaven in a wild flower,
Hold infinity in the palm of your hand
And eternity in an hour. ~ William Blake
Is our capacity to be astonished held in contempt by our selective bias or selective view of what is important or what we value as worthy of astonishment?
In a famous 2007 experiment, violin virtuoso Joshua Bell tried his hand at busking in a plaza of the D.C. metro, playing anonymously for nearly an hour on his priceless 1713 Stradivarius violin, a talent for which he is often paid $1,000 a minute. In the end, only seven out of a thousand passersby stopped to listen. He collected $32.17. When he finished playing each piece, there was no response from the passing crowd. But, as Washington Post writer Gene Weingarten noted, “Every single time a child walked past, he or she tried to stop and watch. And every single time, a parent scooted the kid away.” ~ John Koenig, Wash. Post
To me.....LIFE itself is astonishing - from the moment our cells conspire to congregate in a mass functional congruency to the moment this organ called our heart miraculously begins to beat.
Somehow...life exceeds our expectations or what we consider possible every day (despite our proclivity to adopt hedronic adaptation)...and if by some chance of awareness we are called to notice the extra-ordinary, we might just find ourselves....astonished by what we see.
“Life moves on, whether we act as cowards or heroes. Life has no other discipline to impose, if we would but realize it, than to accept life unquestioningly. Everything we shut our eyes to, everything we run away from, everything we deny, denigrate or despise, serves to defeat us in the end. What seems nasty, painful, evil, can become a source of beauty, joy, and strength, if faced with an open mind. Every moment is a golden one for him who has the vision to recognize it as such”
― Henry Miller
The capacity to 'feel' astonishment is what makes us unique as human beings. It is what provokes us to reflect and what grabs our attention from the ordinary.
To a large degree, our state of astonishment is intimately connected to our internal truth - who we are and who we are becoming.

mmmmmmmmmmm
just like i said.... you and @juliamulcahy.
it's a journey. a well-appreciated journey.
and i love hearing everyone expressing it in DITO too - it brings it to life in a new way
I was very inspired by the conversation as well - nice to know that we can all connect in a deep way and appreciate the process of expressing that.
Great post. I like to describe myself as being "easily delighted." I must admit that my current circumstances are challenging this, because I don't really want to be where I am, yet must stay put for months to come. It is a challenge each day to find the delight anyway. Thanks for this excellent reminder of how important it is to make that effort.
Hi @indigoocean
Sorry that you have a challenging situation right now. I suppose that is part of life, too. Sometimes I think we're meant to just take in an experience and learn from it, learn about ourselves....where we are strongest or perhaps where we need to focus our attention. And try not to let those challenging moments define who we are - which can be difficult.
I hope that you can find moments of grace and beauty in-between the challenges.
Much love to you Indigoocean
Thank you.

Maybe it still has that potential, we just actively refuse to allow it. Maybe if I get a week holiday I can focus on learning to paint vs everyday, just a little bit.
Great post wings and you made it very relatable, a bit intimidating since you find it astonishing every day. I will settle for moments of astonishment as I walk at night. Just as with that stereo image I stare at the stars and the expanse is astonishing. Then some dick blasts his speakers, and I am astonished at the simplicity of their existence as they race past for no reason other than to have the car make noise.
I do actually believe in this whole-heartedly as I've had to learn to do this in order to survive my childhood ;) Every day is 'new' and an opportunity to grow. And if you think about it, Pen....we're not the same person as even yesterday - each day brings something new and our perspective has changed. Yet, at the core and the heart of who you are is still there - keep that with you always and keep the lessons only of the other stuff. I don't think happiness and a fresh view comes from happiness alone - it comes from learning to balance life and knowing who we are without the projection the world wants to superimpose. Life 'is' beautiful and astonishing and you could never run out of the secrets and surprises it has to offer in a single lifetime. It might not be an 'epic' astonishment moment, it might be as simple as being present and aware enough to witness the last leaf on a tree fluttering in the wind before it breaks free and floats to the earth. And maybe you're inspired enough to write a poem about it.
Everyday is astonishing :) Even those interjections of noise. We are a messy lot! A few years ago I was driving down the road thinking...always thinking. Something on the radio spurred my thoughts regarding all the messiness of life, war, etc I had to turn the noise off but my mind was still going. I felt a little frustrated by this never ending saga - like why does all this have to exist, why can't we learn and move on to something more constructive. And then my mind drifted to the suffering from this history...all the suffering, all the lives that have come and gone, all the stories. Then I saw what came of this in my mind....all the great works - the sculptures and paintings, the great novels and poetry, the comedy and dramas, the music....it all just kind of swirled around in my mind into this sad, but very beautiful story of humanity. Would all this exist if it weren't for this suffering or noise? And what would it be like to wipe all that away? .....but I digress (much!) :)
I like epic, but guess that is also why I always have a tough time deciding what to read or watch. It might not exist, but what would exist in its place. We are maybe at the point of civilization where that alternative course can be plotted, the one without too much of the bad. Maybe a happy renaissance just is not the same. Does seem that for us to progress we need to remove a lot. I really like that movie equilibrium, except for the happy ending since it took the predictable route. I enjoyed your digression, a lot to think about.
I love each day of this life on Earth, there is wonder and beauty around me and I want to grab hold of every moment enjoying it all. I agree, we need to keep the feeling of astonishment and keep looking at life through a child's eyes.
So true, @angiemitchell! Through a child's eyes :)
I guess it also depends on the level of depression we are experiencing, but yeah, I agree with this for the most part.
Depression is quite the little party pooper, isn't it? I once had a very wise friend (RIP) that said to me, "Enjoy your depression." I had to laugh at the brilliance of that statement and the unexpected positive contrast that seemed to take away that feeling's power and hold. And every time I have to go into that forest of depression, I do hear her words.
Life is amazing! I am a genetic lottery winner of epic proportions.
Thanks for a wonderful, uplifting post.
I'm happy to hear you find this post uplifting :)
I think i like to being a kid again. True! When we were young everything we see are all wonders to us. Our eyes widen with enthusiasm! I wish we could bring that pary of us as we grow. Life is not that hard to appreciate the simple things.
Anything is possible as you said, there is no dream we cannot reach. It still can be, we somehow make our lives difficult when it is only simple. Let us not complicate life per se.

I think children are much better at 'living in the moment'. We do seem to complicate things more than they have to be.
Yes! Exactly!
They do it best while we suck at it.. hahahahahaha.. how ironic life can be when its little ones who knows how to live life simply.
