The Hive Buddy Up Word, Bravery.
The Hive
Everyone is welcome to write a post about the word Bravery, post it early on Monday, and present it at the Buddy Up server in Discord. A new word is announced at the end of the show, which normally lasts an hour to 90 minutes. I stay for an after chat if one is going on. Monday does not seem to be a busy day.
Bravery
Thinking of phrases about bravery. Most of them lean toward war or rewards. I was going to cheat a bit and grab some quotes and write about the quotes. Like Fortune favours the brave. True bravery is shown on the battlefield. Under each phrase, I could write a short passage about ten of them and it would look like I put hours of thought into it. I used https://WiseOldSayings.com in my search of quotes.
When browsing through some quotes. I really was not finding any I had thoughts on. This plot to take some short-cuts was not going so well. I did come across one quote though by a French guy called Franois de la Rochefoucauld.
True bravery is shown by performing without witness what one might be capable of doing before all the world.
I particularly like this quote personally. Its speak of bravery with war or reward. I find the use of war or reward in a physical manner not a good measure of bravery. War is a kill or be killed situation when you are in combat. Although armies may be under orders to go to hostile places. Many do this with fear they have to over come. The fear is not always of getting hurt. At times those fears can be for family. The children in a family might be asked to be brave while the parent is away. There is unseen bravery in wars which we never hear about.
The rewards for bravery can be encouraging. We all like to get something for the efforts we put in. I find this hard to measure bravery too. It seems a bit closer to chasing a goal or chasing the reward to me. How much is personal ambition or bravery. Is a person brave to go down into a pit if they are searching for treasure?
Repeating the same quote here.
True bravery is shown by performing without witness what one might be capable of doing before all the world.
Knowing if you have the ability to do something or not makes a big difference. If you know you can do it, it is much easier to endure the chore. What about when you are unsure. Even when you are sure, pressure can cast that doubt to your mind.
Let us set a scene. Three mountain climbers half way up a steep climb with some resting places on the way. The best climber has a hand injury, the injury is not too bad but the use of one hand is gone. They rest at one of resting spots to evaluate and consider their best options. looking down from the climb they have made, there are three bears also climbing, removing the option of going back down.
One guy is out of the picture, his fate relies on the ability of the other too. He must face what is coming regardless. He does the moral things urges his friends to make their escape, no point to the bears getting them all. Of the two remaining, they have a choice to make. One could climb and then hoist up the injured party. One would need to stay to assist the injured with the climb too. Ensure his equipment was rigged correctly and secure. This way all three would survive. The one who climbed up to hoist the others, is he weaker than the other two? All three would have being brave in one way or another. The choices were limited though and leaving one behind never looks good on your resume.
With three people involved, there are witness to the account.
What about when there is no witness. A bravery at this time no one can measure. The one who confronts and overcomes the fear of trying, shows bravery no matter the task they have before them. Taking that plunge and risking the failure in what is unknown.
With no action there is no bravery.
Bravery is in the trying,
not in the failure or success of an endeavour.

Just had to point this out because it is bloody funny.
If you have witnesses to "bravery" then I think it can be argued you had other motivation this may end up making you seem a fool . That quote, however, trips me up.
The section about before all the world. It confuses the fuck out of me actually since it says it is showing before the world but performing without witness.
For myself, I can only understand it if I take witness to mean not ordered or influenced by reasons beyond your own choice, and before the world to in fact mean that the act becomes known, or else it might end up being does a tree make a sound when it falls in the forest and there is no one around to hear it?
So I would instead phrase the quote as
funny though since it can only be acknowledged as bravery if known.... dammit I confused myself.
