DRONES. The ultimate family home video camera.
Yes. I know. Drones have a lot of useful applications. From structural safety inspections, geographic mapping, search and rescue, real estate, journalism, to future use cases like shipping/delivery, drones are impacting many industries and services. But really, most of us just want to make really cool home videos!
As a Part 107 Certificate Drone Pilot, I am well aware of the commercial applications and viability of using unmanned aircraft systems (UAS…aka drones). As a photographer and cinematographer, I consider a drone an extension of my camera equipment, regardless if I am using it professionally or for filming some home videos.
Drone technology has matured rapidly, and smaller and better consumer drones have been introduced to the general public. Consumers now have access to the greatest home video camera EVER! In the US, you don’t need a permit to fly one. You just have to be aware of some rules and safety guidelines. You can learn more at the official Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) drone website FAADroneZone
Here’s a video I shot while on vacation with my family in the Russian countryside. Enjoy!
Feel free to ask me how to achieve a "cinematic" look with your own footage.
