[Dream Report] Dirt Biking in Hawaii
This was an unusually mundane one. There were some minor surreal elements to it, but by and large it's something that could plausibly happen irl, if I had any interest in spending money on this sort of trip. I've been to Hawaii when I was younger, and much of the imagery in the dream drew heavily on those memories.
It started out at night. I was in a hotel looking out at the beach. It was perhaps 200 feet to the beach, and between the hotel and the beach was a sort of lavish walkway combined with various embedded pools and hot tubs, as well as tables and chairs, a few food vendors and other amenities.
I could see the twinkling lights of star and moonlight reflected off the rippling surface of the ocean, as well as a few flashlights out on the beach. The walkway nearer to the hotel was illuminated by overhead lamps, and colored light emitted by decorations on the tables.
There was something weird happening in the night sky, though. Hard to describe. A bit like those spirals people saw in the sky a few years back that turned out to be the exhaust from out of control missiles:
These "sky spirals" were faint, but visible, and absolutely everywhere in the sky. Slowly spinning, moving this way and that, bumping into each other, changing trajectory. I often see strange phenomena in the sky in my dreams. I always wonder "what it means", but come away with no clear answers.
The next morning, I set off on a touristy group dirtbiking trip up the side of a volcano. The dirtbikes make no engine noise, nor were they battery powered, but ran on compressed air from scuba cylinders strapped to the frame. I've seen this before, so I assume that's where I got the idea from. It's not terribly practical irl due to the poor energy density of compressed air, but my subconscious didn't know or care about that.
We drove, as a group, over rough volcanic terrain until we reached a nice spot to stop for lunch. It was sunny and pleasant, humidity wasn't too bad. I don't recall what I ate, but I had one of those juice drinks that comes in a metallic pouch you have to stab the yellow plastic straw into. I used to love those when I was younger, always got them in my school lunches.
I apparently lost some of my belongings, though it wasn't clear exactly what I'd lost. It must have been important because I split off from the rest of the group, something that a tourist firm would never allow irl I'm sure. The dream ended here, with no closure re: whatever it is I'd lost.
It's a recurring element of my dreams that the technology involved is wildly impractical. There seems to be some latent desire for that sort of novelty. Maybe the take-away is that I should desire more practical, attainable things? Less Walt Disney, more Henry Ford. That may just be a core element of who I am, though. Do I want to get rid of that?
Dreams are the right place for that sort of thing anyway. The place to explore interesting places, contraptions and ideas which can find no expression in reality. Literature is the other right place for such things, and consequently my writing is based very heavily on the content of my dreams.
