We all know that the method of making portraits drawn manually is quite an art.

In this opportunity, I will show you a step by step of how to make a half-body of a female figure.

The first thing I did was to make a linear or contour sketch to be able to have a reference where to leave with each shadow and fill that warrants the portrait. Remember that this weight is very important to do without settling a lot of the pulse, because later will allow you to remove lines or paths that may not serve you once you go forward in the art, so you can correct future errors.

In the next step continue with the look, as it defines the true position or the profile to where the face points. It is very important to be very clear when you get to this point because the poorly used perspective between the face and the look makes the difference when the person who looks at your drawing can capture or be attracted to it. For me it is often a bit complicated when I get to this part because it costs me a little to achieve that effect, but once satisfied with the result I can go forward in the rest of the facial part. It is important to try to be as precise as possible when making the outline of the eye contour, make it as fine but accurate, since it is a super delicate part in a portrait by the degree of sensitivity that this can express.

For the contour of the nose and mouth as it should be very cautious, should not be made so defined, rather must be somewhat dimmer to give a touch much more realistic and not caricature. As with the texturing of the face you have to play with the gradients and use the technique that best results, many prefer a stick of mixes, others a blur of shadows and others simply do so using different types of pencils drawing ( HB pencils) which are the most recommended for this type of arts, since they give you more professional paths and different types of textures.

The hair is one of the parts that require to play much more with the leftovers the tonalities between the same color and the shadows, to be able to give volume, texture and movement, especially if it is a long wavy hair. In which I like to start first plotting lines from the root and release it to long strokes, so the lines are blurred dark (from where you start) to clearer (where you loose), this technique can be practiced on a separate paper to improve it and Apply it to your portraits

To finish I gave a general review in order to better define the shadows and textures throughout the illustration, note that on the arm part also gave some volume when adding shadows sideways and side, so it would not be simply flat. In the same way at the top of the face I played a little with what would be the shadow of the hair over the girl's forehead.

This is all for today, it is very easy to develop this technique if you are perseverant and patient, and in time you can improve. To a next portrait where I'll be explaining more of this technique.
