This is the collection of my sketches on the Temple Mount area in Jerusalem.

It was a small hill with valleys on three sides, and a much taller hill, Mount Olives to the east. It was just a common non-distinguishable hill. There was a water source at the foot of the hill, which enabled people to settle in the area, and a flat rock outcrop at the top which people used as a threshing ground.
That was before David chose Jerusalem as his capital, then Solomon built a temple to the north of his palace. The hill was built up and flatten. The first Temple was not a huge complex. And the name was coined: the Temple Mount.

Further down in history, the First temple was destroyed by the Babylonians in 586-7BC, got rebuilt a couple of generations later in 515BC, which last till King Herod (He was the ruler at the time of Jesus' birth.) He decided to renovate and expand the Temple Mount, and started a massive construction. He built a huge platform , usually Roman technology of stone arching, and had beautifully crafted stone acting as retaining wall all around the Temple Mount.
This wall survived until today. When you walk around the area, you can still see the large block of stones from Herod's time 2000 years ago.

The Jews revolted against the ruling Romans, and Jerusalem was attacked and the Temple destroyed again in 70AD. After another Jewish Second revolt in 130AD, the Romans exiled and did not allow any Jews to live in Jerusalem. Jerusalem was in the hands of the Gentiles. The Romans even built a temple there to honor their gods.

Then in 7th century, the Muslims took over the entire area. They built the Dome of the Rock in 691. This shrine over the years was damaged by wars and earthquakes, and it survives until today.
