This is the glory of Greek architecture, built in its golden times, in those days, the temple besides being a house for the goddess Athena, it also functioned as a financial center, more or less like a bank in our days. In those ancient times, the temple (or any large temple elsewhere) could accumulate a lot of money through peoples' offering, and the priests would take care of the extras and leased them out to those in need for interests, and the rich temples would become richer in return, and they would have more said in the society.
