My drawing of PAUL WALKER using only one graphite pen

in #drawing8 years ago (edited)

Yesterday I found the perfect graphite pen in the local art supply store. Usually I like to use different pens because of the different shades and contrasts that makes a drawing look alive. I use everything from 2H to 8B for my drawings, H stands for how hard the pencil is and B stands for how black it is. The problem is that the really black ones are often very soft and you need to sharpen them every 2 seconds to be able to draw small details.
The pen I found yesterday was a 6B graphite pen. It is hard enough to keep it sharp but still black enough to shade the really dark areas.

This is a drawing I made of Paul Walker using only that 6B graphite pen.

First I start to draw the basic shapes of his face by freehand. Many years ago I used the grid method to get the right porportions but after a lot of practice you get better at drawing without it. The grid method is still very good to use, it forces you to focus on one part at the time.
After the basic shapes I drew his eyes and made a light shade over his face using a peace of toiletpaper to smoth out the graphite.

After that I started with the beard. Small thin lines and always keep the pen sharp to make the hair look real. This is why I like my new pen because I don't have to sharpen it that often but I can still make it very dark if I press hard enough

When the beard is done I continued with his hair and because the background was black and faded into his hair I filled it and pressed hard to get it as black as possible. In real life it is very black but it's hard to take a photo without getting reflections in the graphite. I also shaded his skin and I alternate between the pen and eraser to make it darker and brighter. Sometimes I use my eraser more than my pens, it's a good way to shape the shadows and highlight the brighter areas

I continue shading his neck and made some final adjustments of the shading in his face. In the original photo he has some hairs that is almost white. To make them I use a piece of transparent tape and put it very gently over the area where the white hairs are. Then I draw on top of the tape with a sharp pen and then pull the tape. The graphite is going to stick to the glue and you will have a thin white line. I only make 2 or 3 lines at the time, if I would draw more there is a big risk that the tape would stick to the paper and when I pull it a big piece of paper would rip off.

You can see the finished drawing below. I'm still learning how to draw realistic portraits and I still need more practice to be really good at it. Let me know what you think of it in the comment section :)
