The First And Only Icon I Ever Painted....

Icon Jesus.jpg

This is the first icon I ever painted about 13 years ago. Painting an icon needs a thorough concentration... I had no idea how to make it because I wasn´t interested before. Once, I saw how lovely they were in reality thru museum visits, I suddenly became interested and did some research on how to draw it. I came to know about the history of the Orthodox Church and its icons. I showed a photo of this to an icon expert, who was an orthodox priest and who gave icon painting seminars and he said that every painter should be careful with the eyes. According to him the eyes of Jesus in my icon looked so intense.... the eyes should be mellow and touching the heart of the beholder.

I once visited the Russian Orthodox Church in Vienna´s 3rd District and they are full of amazing iconic paintings in their altar... I love what I saw and most of the icons were carefully painted with gold color. Color Pigments (powder) are normally mixed with egg yolk to bind the pigment. Nowadays, there are ready-mix paints to choose from and you do not have to mix your own colors anymore. Some icons painters prefer the egg yolk method.

How I wish I have the chance to learn formal icon painting... it would be an amazing experience for me. Well, who knows!

Thank you for reading me.

you are so blessed with such talent. i even have hard time just completing a simple circle. 😁😂

Thank you. The hardest part in this circle is to fill it with the yellow paint carefully so that the paint doesn´t go outside the circle and smudge the whole painting.

This is pretty cool. I can't quite tell from the photo - is that a metallic gold paint around Jesus' head? I love Russian Orthodox iconography :)

Cheers - Carl

Hi Carl! That´s just a normal yellow paint I used , it´s the reflection of light you are seeing... Since this was a first icon, it was a beginner´s painting so to see If I was able to paint an icon at all... hehehe, I thought It would save me the gold sheet used in such painting which is actually expensive. Thanks for the visit...
