Drawing Flowers With Colored Ballpens: step by step process
Ballpoint Pens
Creating art with ballpens isn't so hard as you think. I am sure you have tried doodling in class? Hopefully your teacher didn't catch you and ask you the square root of pi.
Let me share work in progress pictures of how I drew these lovely purple flowers on simple coupon bond paper.
Materials
- Colored ballpoint pens (don't use gel pen or sign pens, the ink isn't controlled so easily)
- Paper (any kind)
This was my first drawing after stopping for around two years. My friend managed to inspire me and I had to draw.
I only had bond paper and these pens.
So i picked a subject and attempted to draw.
The Process
Essential tips:
(1) Wipe the tip of the pen with any piece of cloth or scratch paper to wipe pooling ink that causes blotches and unwanted marks.
(2) you can achieve the light to dark effect too!
* Just tilt the pen and lightly draw lines
(3) observe subject well and sketch
* There is no erasing with pens so better be sure. Only draw freehand when youre sure.
LETS START
This is simple line art as you can seem then there is a layer of light crosshatching.
Crosshatching is shading first in one direction and overlaying another layer of shading in a different direction.
Yellow, orange, brown and red for pollen
I used a red gel pen, it has loose kind of ink so it's stronger and i put only dots so it creates strong contrast.
Slowly and carefully shade the shadows.
And continue to the rest of the flowers.
You will see your art transform
From flat to 3D, it doesn't have to be hyper realistic. Just as long as the essence is there.
You will need a lot of patience.
But
The Result
Keep on practicing.
You may want to upgrade your paper and choose:
Acid Free Paper
This ensures that the papers chemical is treated that it will not turn yellow when sunlight hits it.
This causes paper to look old and the paint or ink also changes color.
Stay tuned for more art!
