Mayan Eagle - Hand Drawing
I drew this Mayan eagle (possibly turkey vulture) from studying the works of ancient Mayan artists.
The main reference I use is the Dresden Codex, one of the few surviving books of the Spanish conquest and book burning. This book consists of scanned images from pages that are in very good condition.
If you're interested, the Codex Borgia is another surviving book which has recently been redrawn in full color. Its full of bloody imagery as well as images of gods, rituals and astronomical observations. Vastly different from the Dresden Codex.
It is an intriguing and sometimes mind boggling drawing style, especially since I don't understand the meaning of a lot of it. But it attracts me for some reason.
This is the original pencil drawing:
Thank you for looking,
