Momoyes - The Bestiary
Hi Steemit! In this opportunity I want to share with you an idea that I have been developing throughout this year. However, I wasn’t sure of where to share it... Until now.
What is it? Well, it's a compilation of articles I called The Bestiary. In this small Project, I combine both writing and drawing to exercise my creativity and create my own bestiary, which resulted in a series of illustrations accompanied by text about fantastic creatures.
I started this project because I believe that Venezuelan folklore is a very fun topic. Also, Venezuelans are very superstitious. It comes as no surprise that the history of the country is full of myths and stories that are still popular in the present.
Even so, I have to clarify that I give my own interpretation to each legend, so the illustrations may differ a bit from whatever you may have in mind.
Without further ado, I share the first creature that is part of my personal bestiary.
Momoyes
What are they?
To simplify things a bit, Momoyes can be understood as a type of gnome originated in Venezuelan folklore, although they also have characteristics of other types of magical beings such as water spirits.
Appearance
Momoyes are often depicted as little men of about 16 inches in height. In some legends their clothing is described in an ethnic way; they dress with feathers, leaves and flowers. It is also said that they wear long beards and huge hats.
My research has led me to think that they take advantage of their short stature to stack up and disguise themselves as political activists to meddle with the chaotic political scene in the country.
Habitat
Momoyes are said to live in Lagoons and rivers of the Venezuelan Andes. Some legends say that they can also be found underground.

I like to think that they are responsible for making Lucky Charms’ marshmallows and that they keep themselves busy underground in a gigantic factory, or something.
Abilities
It is said that they have the power to control the weather and water. However, they waste their powers playing pranks on people. What a shame.
Final comments
I know this was quite brief, maybe for next entries I will make the text a bit longer. However, I wanted to keep it short to post it both in english and in spanish to share it with most people in the Steemit community.
Do you have any creature in mind that you would like to know about? Would you like me to post the entire illustration process?
I am new to this, so I am open to any kind of comments and suggestions. Your opinion is important to me!
Thank you for reading. See you in the next bestiary.
