One thing that gets to me in regard to drag queen story hours is that everybody is ignoring a simple point.
-- dress codes--
Forget any narratives about "transing the kids" or anything like that. Really, so long as the content of the story is age appropriate, and parents are informed, and have a right to opt out; I can't punch many holes in this kind of performance. Hell, in Shakespeare's time, every female character was played by a male actor. It's not like we haven't gone through a few thousand years of performance art with men dressing up as women. Hell, I've done it.
Still, it's not like all of these drag queens are dressing modestly.
If a drag queen is performing at a school where a student or a teacher would be sent to the office, or home (or, possibly fired in the case of teachers), to be better covered up, why shouldn't apply to the drag queens?
Some of the images from these drag story hours have shown drag queens in spaghetti straps, strapless tops, fishnets, miniskirts, etc. All of which would get my niece who is about to go to college sent home for dress code violations.
Still, we're letting this slide for drag performers in front of elementary school students?
