Tragedy (Saturday Creature Feature)

With Soulsword and other projects I have going on, I only have a short taste of horror for you today. In fact, just a hundred words.

For those of you who don't know, there's a special term for a piece of microfiction that's exactly 100 words. It's called a "drabble." Drabbles are a great deal of fun, and they're very helpful if you want to work on specific writing techniques such as dialogue or, as here, setting a mood in a very short space. Their economy by nature forces you to be specific in your word choice and to tell a fair amount of your story by implication. All skills that carry over into longer prose.

Bre-ke-ke-kex ko-ax! Ko-ax!

Mason’s pulse pounded as he held Grant’s head underwater.

“She may be a whore, but she’s my whore.”

The bubbles finally stopped. He rehearsed his story while he made sure Grant was dead.

“He must’ve slipped... We’ve been hunting ducks on that lake since we were kids...”

Bre-ke-ke-kex ko-ax! Ko-ax!

Mason looked around. Nothing but the duck blind.

“Well, the lake sure as hell is haunted now.”

Something plopped into the water behind him.

“Damn frogs.”

He frowned. It was too late in the year for frogs. Then a webbed hand pulled him under.
