DOS Gaming At Its Best - The Good Old Days
Let's dial things back to the good old days of PC gaming. Let's go all the way back to 1980s and early 90s, those of us who can.....
What were your favourite games to play back then? I have a fair few favourites back then; Grand Prix Curcuit, PGA Tour Golf, California Games, Double Dragon.... but none more so than this:
Oh yeah!!
Street Rod!!
Do you remember this? I was going through my old hard drives, and backups of backups of backup, and found a little folder which i had been savign all my old games into, and in there was a folder names "SR1." I immediately know what is was, and fired up the DOSBox application which was conveniently saved with it. DOSBox is a neat little application which throttles your CPU, memory etc, and allows your computer to run slow enough to play these old DOS games. It's a marvelous creation.
C:\DOSGAMES>cd SR1
C:\DOSGAMES\SR1>SR.EXE
Eureka!! It works!! Look at that: VGA 320 x 200 16 colours!!!!
First stop is getting you license done.
Then you head to the newspaper to buy a set of wheels.
Once you've done that, you head to your garage and customize the daylights out to the car to make it a fast as possible, before heading out for a drag or road race.
The aim of the game is to work your way up from a cheap car, racing low end drivers for money, or to win their cars, until you have a hotted up car, and have won enough races for The King in his black Corvette to accept a challenge, for pink slips.
Beat him, and you win the game, but he's really, really hard to beat, especially if your car isn't fully optioned and in 100% race-ready condition. IT's a game that can take you hours and hours to get all the combinations and parts just right, and then your driving skills have to be millimeter perfect to get the win. What an awesome game!!
SAY WHAT!!!
Now, I took these screenshots within 15 minutes of playing the game... I cheated (Yes, I still remembered after a few tries)!! Let me know how, step by step, and I'll give the first correct comment a ticket each in the Hayrunners Delegated SP Raffle.
What were your all-time favourite old games to play back in the day? The 3 comments after the winning one above, with the best (judged by me) engagement, will each also win a ticket into the raffle.
Oh wow!!! What a memory of years gone by!!!! Still love this game!!!
The Ancient Art of War - 1984
That was state of the art at the time ;)
Have always wanted to do a remake of it but I guess games like this are a dime-a-dozen these days.
CGA 4 colour graphics and all! Looks like a pretty cool game. 1984... hmmm I don't think we had a computer in the house yet. Yeah so many of those type games out today, especially on mobile.
Oh I forgot to add Dune 2 to my list.
I loved the bmx racing in California games, my brother and I took turns fighting over the keyboard to play that. Then before that was a version of Prince of Persia that we used to play on a mates Commodor 64 (with the game loaded on a tape).
BMX was a lot of fun, doing 360s ajd backflips, and stacking all the time. Didn't have a C64, but played on it at my friends house often, fast forwarding tapes to counter position x and pressing play.... things we had to do for fun.
Never played this one. But spent many, many hours on Summer Games, Ghostbusters and International Karate.
Enjoyed a couple of the others you mentioned too.

Summer Games.. I think I remember that. Track and field, with long jump, javelin etc.... We had an arcade game at the local shop with something like that. We wore a groove in the buttons by swiping a coin over them to make the dude run faster. Broke world records like that!
Yes BMJ - I remember seeing an arcade version; and, yes we used to wreck joysticks trying to break records. So many in fact, we had to give up the game. Good times.
