Tales from donkeys mouth part 3: Makeup

Ancient Indians of both genders applied a number of different makeup products. While makeup is generally seen as merely superficial, to Indians, cosmetics were a means of practicing their religion and culture. In some cases, products were reserved for special occasions; in others, they were used regularly to enhance the wearer's luck, beauty, spirituality and status. Not only humans but makeup of animals are also done during festivals, occasions (like marriage ,child birth) and when they taken for sale in market.

In haat itself their are many shops which sell different kinds of colorful ropes, bells etc.

In donkey haat , donkey traders and owners decorate their animals with natural colors and there are arrangements by adminstration and local people under a tent where different names are written on donkeys body. This name may be their original name or but mostly are from popular culture in India like names of politicians, film stars and character of film.

लालु (Lalu ) is inspired from famous Indian politician Lalu Prasad Yadav from Bihar state who is famous for his wit and jokes all over country and behind him is (Mulayam) another politician from U.P. state of India.

सुल्तान (Sultan) an Hindi super hit film in which Salman Khan plays lead role by same name based on life of a wrestler.

I asked a few people around about since when this trend of writing names on donkey is prevalent. I came know this trend has been followed from a very long time (nobody could date it clearly), earlier names written on donkeys were from names of character from Hindu mythology and epics like Ramayana and Mahabharta (like Duryodhan, Lakshman,
Shakuni, Lakshman, Ali-Baba Chalis Chor etc). All this has been taken with good spirit, everybody has been tolerant about it. Then with the rise of cinema, mass media and finally with smart phones and social media their was shift towards name of film stars (like Amitabh Bachan and Shah rukh khan ), politicians (like Lalu Prasad Yadav, Manmohan Singh, Modi) etc.
