You Have An Extra Minute? Any Spare Time? Down Time? In Your ‘Free’ Time....

in #donate7 years ago (edited)

“Hey, do you have any extra time?” It isn’t likely the person reading this has ‘extra time.’ Extra as in a couple hours during the week to:

Should a bizarre event take place and you find yourself with a couple extra hours during the week, and you’re just absolutely torn on where or how you should utilize those hours, don’t do something that sucks. Maybe you could play a game of - donate your time to someone who needs it. I doubt anyone in your phone will shoot you a meme about People That Donate Their Time Suck should you choose to do such a thing.

(See, Drew said it)

I’m sure you’re aware of a non-profit type organization near you that’s been around awhile and hiring. By hiring I mean their doors are open to any and all volunteers. But maybe you’re new to the area, if that’s the case, ask G! google ‘non profit organizations near me.’ That should be the best start ever.
enough of that

Anyway, ok enough small talk, there’s actually a real story here:
A buddy of mine, I’ve know him most my life, I actually call him the luckiest guy I know, came by the other day. It had been a little while since we’d seen each other. After catching up for a few minutes, he starts telling me about how a couple days a week he’s been helping out with:

Before I continue, I asked G how to get in touch with a meals on wheels near me and found this home page for those of you who are clawing and scratching at the opportunity:

(You’re even cooler than my buddy!)

He tells me how he was watching a football game and a commercial came on for meals on wheels. I knew what commercial he was talking about cuz I’d seen it. He’s saying how the lady in the commercial, who’s having food delivered, is named Aida and he thought it would be fun to go meet a bunch of Aida’s.
interesting

To his surprise, after delivering a couple different routes for a few months, it was the drivers he’d really began to enjoy hanging out with. Apparently with their program, it’s 2 people to a route, one driver and one visitor person. Several people donate their time by driving a couple days a week and he just goes with one of them. He gets to meet all the clients and say hello, make sure everything is ok and listen if they want to talk. For the most part, however, it’s a quick knock on the door and ends with a handover of food that’s actually healthy and nutritional. Less than 5 minutes, he’s out. What he didn’t count on was getting to know the people driving the car he’s jumping in and out of for an hour during the day.
what about em?

By riding shotgun, he gets to hear these people tell stories who are at least 20 years older than him, some even older. Military stories that can only be told by that person who happens to be driving the car you’re riding in right now. Widow’er stories after 50 years of marriage. History about the city you’re delivering food to, most of your drivers have been there as long as you’ve been alive. They each have unique growing up stories, too. Some lived all across America and some lived in multiple countries. He had quite a few interesting stories and after listening to him for a few hours, he took off.
the end..... nah

A summary and then the end:
He was really looking forward to meeting the new faces on the other side of the door’s he’d knock on. Without realizing it, he’s being gifted some new friends along the way. These people are much older than him and bring a lot of wisdom to the table. He’s getting worlds of knowledge now, for free, a couple times a week and he thought he was the one doing the donating.... that’s funny!

Do you think that sounds like a tattoo one might see in a prison documentary? Or is it just me? Probably just me... thank you!

What, haha…?!?! I’m thinking ‘smile now, cry later’ is more prison-y then what I said. ;) @dandays
