The Sumerian word ‘Kur’ has a number of different meanings. It’s original meaning appears to be ‘mountain’, which progressed into ‘foreign land.’ However, Kur was also commonly used to refer to the Sumerian and Babylonian nether world, and to refer to the great monster that lived in the nether world. This multiple meaning leads to confusion as Kur represents a feature of terrain, a physical/spiritual place, and a living being. However, the latter two share one common aspect, they are evil. In Sumerian mythology Kur seems to exist solely as a creature for the gods and great heroes to hunt and kill.He is a representation of evil, chaos, and everything that is inimical to human civilization (not unlike Tiamat), and thus represents all destructive forces.
