To be clear, this is not to argue for or against guns, only an argument for reason. First and foremost one cannot use countries to prove the effectiveness of gun control, as the base group of study is both too narrow and too varied (i.e. there are not enough subjects to study, and at the same time, the factors are too broad). I can name countries with strict gun control that range from high to low rates of crime and violence, just as I can do so for countries with high rates of gun control. This is due to social, economic and political factors that are impossible to account for. If one were to properly study guns, it would have to be on an individual level as versu a social context, as in the former case there are but two hundred or so subjects, as versu thousands, the former of which is an insufficient sample to cancel out all extraneous factors. Secondarily, the raw crime rate of a nation is a moot point, because each country, with its unique laws, has incalculable variation. For instance, if my friend were to use marijuana recreationally here, in washington state, it would not be a crime, whereas it would be in arkansas. Switzerland, being one of the most liberal (and therefore by definition least socially restrictive) nations on earth would naturally have a low crime rate, since what is criminal elsewhere has been decriminalized. If you want a rational comparison, it would be necessary to remove all but the laws applicable to the subject at hand (hence my use of homicide and violent gun-related crimes in my previous citations). The evidences you have proposed are therefore insufficient to form a strong thesis, both in their scientific invalidity as being improperly tested and in their philosophical invalidity in testing the wrong areas of concern. This is not to say that gun control is favored or not favored, only that the information at hand is no argument one way or another. First and foremost one cannot use countries to prove the effectiveness of gun control, as the base group of study is both too narrow and too varied (i.e. there are not enough subjects to study, and at the same time, the factors are too broad). I can name countries with strict gun control that range from high to low rates of crime and violence, just as I can do so for countries with high rates of gun control. This is due to social, economic and political factors that are impossible to account for. If one were to properly study guns, it would have to be on an individual level as versu a social context, as in the former case there are but two hundred or so subjects, as versu thousands, the former of which is an insufficient sample to cancel out all extraneous factors. Secondarily, the raw crime rate of a nation is a moot point, because each country, with its unique laws, has incalculable variation. For instance, if my friend were to use marijuana recreationally here, in washington state, it would not be a crime, whereas it would be in arkansas. Switzerland, being one of the most liberal (and therefore by definition least socially restrictive) nations on earth would naturally have a low crime rate, since what is criminal elsewhere has been decriminalized. If you want a rational comparison, it would be necessary to remove all but the laws applicable to the subject at hand (hence my use of homicide and violent gun-related crimes in my previous citations). The evidences you have proposed are therefore insufficient to form a strong thesis, both in their scientific invalidity as being improperly tested and in their philosophical invalidity in testing the wrong areas of concern. This is not to say that gun control is favored or not favored, only that the information at hand is no argument one way or another.
