How May Domain Types Are There?

For this post, I’m going to assume that whoever is reading it already knows what exactly a domain is, so - without further ado, here are the various types of domains:

  • Top-level domains (TLDs) are at the top of the domain name hierarchy on the internet. TLDs are the abbreviation for top-level domains. There are thousands of different TLDs to choose from. In recent years, ICANN has made it easier for organizations and individuals to pitch and register new top-level domains (TLDs). The number of TLDs available skyrocketed as a result.
  • Country code top-level domains (ccTLD) are next on the list. These are technically linked to distinct countries, as the name implies. Each country has its own ccTLD, but you are not required to use one simply because you live there. The ccTLD CO, for example, is legally reserved for websites established in Colombia, although it's frequently used by internet firms such as AND(dot)CO.
  • Then there are generic top-level domains (gTLDs). This is more of a definition than a specific domain type. It's basically a variant of a TLD, as the name implies. As a result, this form of domain can be classified as a TLD as well. This domain extension's generic aspect refers to the types of use-cases that these domains are meant for.
  • In terms of hierarchy, second-level domains are below the TLDs mentioned above. This isn't to say they're any less valuable or authoritative. Rather, this describes the second piece of the domain name, such as the ‘reddit’ in ‘www.reddit.com’ Country code second-level domains also exist and they usually look something along the lines of .co.uk, or .GOV.UK
  • In the domain name hierarchy, third-level domains are below second-level domains. They are not a complete domain name in and of itself, but rather a part of one. For example, the third level domain in the domain name "www.reddit.com" is the "www." part of it. Or, if you’re using a subdomain to build an additional section of your site, this would be a third-level domain as well.

As for where to get a domain for yourself, my recommendation is Nominus. You can find their domains here - Nominus Domains
