I've seen nests from large birds sitting mainly on telephone poles around where we live. Sometimes they get moved to a specially built perch so the birds don't disturb or get disturbed. Sometimes the birds don't come back because they either think the nest is compromised or because they liked the other pole better. :)
So, what would you say is the most common reasons you have to replace a transformer or other repair work?
Around here, if we have an outage, it's either something rain/wind related, which includes vehicles running into poles, or even more common, the kamikaze squirrel. It's hard to know what's going through their minds. :)
Pretty interesting stuff. Thanks for taking us on the job.
Most often I would say it’s a close tie between lightning, and trees falling (so wind is at play) during the winter months we get a ton of frost built up on the lines in the mountains and if we don’t keep up on it, the frost will get so heavy it will tear stuff apart!!
As far as quantity goes in a short period of time, fires. Being surrounded by wheats fields we get fires a couple times a year. 2 years ago we lost over 30 poles in one fire. I’m a matter of hours.
Interesting. I probably should have guessed lightning. We just don't get many thunderstorms, and if we do it's rare that the lightning is close or touches down. The wind blowing down trees is common as I indicated, but frost—we live in a valley, so no doubt the higher elevations one either side of us have those issues.
We're also still a rural and mostly farming community, and we do have a runaway fire maybe once or twice a year. Haven't heard about them taking out that many power poles at one time. At that point, the power poles must be aiding in keeping the fire going.
Worst ever happened to me doing some electric work was I got 20 feet up on a ladder and distrubed about 50 bats... holy lord... I was freaked the fuck out as they all flew around and past me. Thinking this is how super villians are created...
Dah ha ha that sucks!! I normally run across tons of wasps and occasional skunk and some rattlesnakes. Haven’t had the luxury of being swarmed by bats...yet lol

Spark from a tractor, a little wind, dry wheat ready to harvest. Then you have a blazing fire that travels so fast you can hardly keep up with it.
Pretty gross. Clean up detail!
At least there weren’t birdie guts everywhere. That is always a nice pleasant surprise.
