Dog Walking Etiquette
Keep a close watch on your dog when out for a walk!
Anyone who owns a dog has certainly had their share of uncomfortable encounters with other dogs when out for a walk. Some dogs just don’t play well with others and even when on a leash can be very aggressive and unruly. Unfortunately not all dog owners are mindful of how their pup is behaving. Even owners with breeds that are known for being unfriendly will act oblivious when their dog is about to stir up trouble with another dog and act almost surprised that a fight is brewing. Since you can’t control what other dog owners do the best you can do is practice preventive dog walking etiquette that will ensure you and your buddy have a peaceful and safe walk.
First off, be well aware of your surroundings. Even if you are at a park you frequent regularly there may be stray dogs lurking about and the more you scan the area the better chance you’ll have to stop a bad situation before it starts. Also be in tune with your own dog’s behavior. Dogs are very keen on scent and even if you can’t see another dog they will certainly sniff him out and begin to act excited. When you notice this rein in the leash and pet your dog soothingly to calm him while you look for the other dog. Treat every strange dog with the same respect. Small Chihuahuas can be just as quick to start a fight as a large Doberman and if you don’t recognize the other dog approach with caution.
Another good idea is to make contact with the owner of the other dog. Though both dogs might be eager to mingle you should always ask at a safe distance if the other dog is friendly or if he gets along with other dogs. A simple nod of the head is all it takes to let other dog owners know that it is OK to facilitate a meeting. If the other dog is not on a leash and you can’t see its owner, be very careful not to get your dog too close. Stray and feral dogs are very dangerous and you’re better off turning and walking away than waiting to find out what the other dog’s intentions are. The more alert you are when walking your dog the better chance you have to avoid unfriendly situations.
Your puppy is the cutest thing! I just wanted to add that it's important to remain calm and controlled when walking your dog, they're very perceptive, especially to the leader, so chances are if you get panicky around other dogs, so will they.
