Courage Comes in Many Forms
This little story is for my friend @bluelightbandit he is a retired police officer injured in the line of duty. His best friend is his dog Colt the Rottweiler. He was gifted to him by his squad on the force after he lost his previous canine friend. Colt as you may have guessed was named after a well known firearm manufacture.
Though he was not on the K-9 Patrol Unit @bluelightbandit does love his canine companion.
Stopping for dinner last night we parked behind a K-9 unit officer. He had left the air conditioning running in his SUV for the dog's comfort. I often see a team practicing their tactical skills during cooler weather and afterward the dogs can partake in some fun and get some exercise. One officer I talked with told me that most criminals when threatened by a dog will quit running and abandon the chase, because they know the dog will never give up.
In European countries bloodhounds have been used by police departments for over 200 years. Bloodhounds have a powerful sniffing ability.
Police canines are used to detect drugs, human scents, bombs, and weapons.
Most police dogs are German shepherds because they are both intelligent and intimidating. Although I have met some pretty intimidating dachshunds and other ankle biters.
A dogs ability to smell is many thousands of times stronger than that of a humans snoot.
It costs approximately $8000 dollars to train a good K9 police dog.
Only the finest officers are rewarded with a canine partner. The dogs live with their human partners for the duration of their time on the force.
The most famous canine officer was Rin Tin Tin the German shepherd. He was left behind by the German soldiers. A sergeant with the U. S. Military service took him home and he became a movie star.
Mattie a Black Labrador retriever in a Connecticut police force could sniff out accelerants used to start fires where she contributed to the solving of many crimes. She was the first canine trained in this specialty and since her retirement several other dogs have been trained in this same field.

As I mentioned earlier, I was afraid that my sketchy internet would keep me from getting online to read your post, but it all worked out and now I can go to bed with a smile on my face! PS. That was a well written report! At one time, I had considered accepting a K-9 position but decided that there would be too much conflict between Rocky and the police dog. You have to be extremely dedicated to be a successful K-9 officer. They require a tremendous amount of attention and constant training. And just imagine riding in your car for 12 hours or more with a large dog in it every single day you work. I rode with one of my friends one night that was a K-9 officer and after about 30 minutes, I was ready to pull my hair out lol. His dog was extremely energetic and loud! So it was basically right behind me barking at every little thing. I couldn't hear the police radios or anything lol. My friend didn't mind it though and loved it. He said you get use to it after a while but it is like babysitting or bringing a baby to work with you lol. So my hat is off to those guys! Thanks again! 😉
