Water feeders for dogs: it's quite common in Asia

Believe it or not the way that your dog gets some water is not perhaps what you might be thinking. In Asia it is very common for dogs to be trained from birth to drink from drop bottles or what some people call hamster feeders. This is totally ok and very common in certain parts of the world.

Look at that! So cute right? Is is unimaginable that a fully grown dog would also get water in the same way? Well it shouldn't be.

I think in the west that mostly this would be considered something that is only done for animals that are in crates for travel but I got some news for you: there are many countries where dogs live their entire lives obtaining water in the same fashion.

this is not an accurate representation of how it happens of course because that dispenser is 1/20th the size of that dog, but it might surprise you to find out that in Asia, this is how most dogs are raised even as adults.

In Thailand, a majority of house dogs actually never get accustomed to drinking water out of a bowl but rather always have it available as a drip of some sort and while they will drink it out of a reservoir of some sort if they absolutely must, for the most part they prefer the "hamster feeder."

I don't have any idea how this got started but more often than not, when i meet Asians who have pets they have trained their dogs to drink out of gravity water feeders for all of their life, even after they are adults. Is this wrong?: I honestly have no idea. I will say one thing though, they do offer the opportunity for there to be a lot less mess.

I think this couldn't possibly work for much bigger animals who could easily drink the entire contents of the bottle in one go but for smaller dogs I cant help but think this might actually be a fantastic idea.

When we have dogs that are in kennels for various reasons we have no choice but to give them water this way for the most part, and you might be surprised how quickly the adapt to it.

I will admit that my own dog actually drinks water this way and getting her to drink out of a bowl needs to be a "seriously parched" type situation or you can forget about her drinking out of a traditional bowl, it just isn't the way she has been wired (by me.)

If you are a pet owner have you ever used this sort of water feeding mechanism for your dog? I think it is probably unlikely if America, or really anywhere in Europe. But for me at least, it was kind of crazy how common this practice is in Asia - because honestly, it is used a lot.
