The largest animal welfare charity in Thailand is facing a crisis

in #dogs4 years ago

We do what we can over here in Krabi but will admit we are a very small organization with very limited funding, facilities, and staff. Therefore we try to limit our scope to a very small area and we actually must engage in "triage" from time to time which means we sometimes have to ignore lessor injuries in lieu of far more desperate ones.

We have always look at The Soi Dog Foundation with a certain sense of awe because they have done so much for helping stray animals and on a level that we can't possibly imagine and definitely would like to aspire to at some time in the future.

There operation is huge compared to ours with nearly half a million sterilizations completed to date and over 16,000 dogs rescued from the animal meat trade. The operate in multiple countries but are based out of Phuket, which is very near Krabi. Because of their relatively vast reach and resources we were shocked to find out that Covid-19 has put a massive strain on their operations as well.

Recently we were made aware via their international outreach social media network that they are currently housing 1300 stray dogs, which is already well beyond their capacity. They specialize in finding "forever homes" for dogs but a lot of this capability is based on their ability to have people visit the shelter and without tourism, that isn't happening. Also, the lack of international flights leaving Thailand makes it nigh on impossible for them to ship the dogs that they have already found homes for abroad.

As you can imagine, housing this many dogs comes with a huge price. I say this because our capacity in our kennels is less than 100 and we have never reached capacity because we don't have enough cash to look after even than many.

In their urgent appeal they talk about how their international relocation programs have been put on hold since there are no flights in or out and also talk about how for $29 a month, you can sponsor a dog in their care. Here at Krabi Animal Rescue, we want to help all that we can and are therefore going to do all we can with our very small network to spread the word for them as well.

Soi Dog Foundation is a truly admirable one because their outreach extends far beyond simply helping the local population. The possess the might to be a major influence in the banning of the dog meat trade in various part of Asia including a recent victory in Hanoi that resulted in the banning of the process.

So if you have a few spare dollars lying around, we are basically pleading with the international community to help out the Soi Dog Foundation in this rather desperate time of need.

well this is tragic but I would be willing to bet that most charities are suffering right now since a lot of the world isn't even allowed to work. I haven't been allowed to work for 4 months now.

yes, therein lies the problem. We have had a few of our monthly donors back out because they simply do not have any income and this is understandable. I suppose I can agree that a human life is more important than an animal's but I hate the fact that we (and Soi Dog Foundation) can no longer do as much as we would like to.

well if these guys are having trouble it is no wonder that you are too. I remember this organization from when i lived in Thailand, they are massive and have a presence even all the way up in Chiang Mai. They might have a field office but i am not sure about that. I hope things can turn around for both of your groups soon. What is the monthly cost to sponsor an animal?

the monthly cost is a lot less than you might think. Soi Dog foundation is able to keep their costs lower than we are by virtue of being a much larger organization. With them it is as little as $25 a month - with us it is more like $35. A pretty small price to pay to save a life, don't you think?
