Some dogs are reluctant to accept help

in #dogs2 years ago

It is an unfortunate but unavoidable part of what we do here in Krabi. In order for the plan to work we have to pick up all of the dogs for sterilization, not just the ones that are happy to come along with us. Normally the pick up and treatment becomes more difficult the more remote the area is that we are traveling to. These dogs out in the jungle normally don't have a lot of human interaction at all and if they do, it is only from one or two people their entire lives.

Therefore, when truck with a team of people turns up trying to lure them over with tasty snacks, the dogs are rightfully frightened. This doesn't mean that we can just leave them there though because if we miss just a few of the dogs those are going to replicate as fast as they can and the problem of overpopulation never ends up getting resolved.

We don't like that the dogs are frightened and clearly not real keen on being kept in a cage, so we do all that we can to make them as comfortable as possible. For the most part the dogs will calm down after a few minutes in the cage, but their fear is understandable. For most of these dogs, this is the first time they have ever seen the inside of these things and then when we get them to the vet for their operation they can hear all the other dogs barking and well, every dog seems to be able to sense that the veterinarian's office is not a place they want to be.

Some dogs require more creative methods of capture than others but one thing that works for us about 90% of the time is to give them a piece of something that they normally would never have, like fried chicken. Then, they become so focused on enjoying it that they don't even realize that we have put a net over them. We never hurt the dogs but it is actually quite simple to get them into the kennel at this point. We simply open up one side of the net with the cage being the only way out. The cage also has another delicious piece of fried chicken in it.

They are normally very confused and afraid when we get them to the vet but we put out food and water in the hopes that they will feel safe. We always only keep them here for as long as we absolutely must do so. It's kind of funny because sometimes the dogs quickly realize that this kennel at the vet is a much safer place than where we picked them up and some of them resist leaving. Unfortunately, we don't have the capacity to make any exceptions, all of the dogs must go back to where we found them.

We hope that after doing this for years that the stray dog population will be better under control in the absence of 2 litters of puppies a year for the females. Of course we are not going to be able to find all the dogs and also there are irresponsible residents that will introduce new ones that we are not made aware of.

We realize that we have a huge, perhaps Sisyphean task ahead of us, but we will never stop, even if we do manage to accomplish our goals.
