Soi Dog Foundation petitions USA to alter their new strict animal import rules

in #dogs3 years ago

When the USA announced that they were changing their animal import rules to a process that is so difficult that it is nearly impossible to get an adopted dog or cat into the country animal-welfare agencies like ours were devastated to hear the news. The people of the United States are major participants in the animal adoption process on a global scale. For our operation, they account for around 50% of our overall adoptions.

The finding of "forever homes" for homeless dogs and cats is basically the most important part of what we do and to have half of our potential adopters taken away in one swoop of the pen, is basically the worst thing that could happen to the dogs and cats not just of Thailand, but to the world.

We are a relatively small operation but The Soi Dog Foundation is one of the largest animal welfare operations in Asia as well as the world. They too have been shocked by this news of the animal import ban into the United States and a currently hosting a petition to have it revised and I encourage all of you animal lovers our there to take a moment to sign it.

The ban, which was enacted on the 14th of July, was imposed on more than 100 countries and it may surprise you if you look at the list, because there is a very good chance that your country is on it. You can have a look at the list of countries here.

I don't know if a great deal of thought was put into selecting these countries because the list just simply seems to be any country that is deemed poorer than the United States themselves. If you were to actually dig into the animal population of these countries (such as Thailand) you would discover that almost all of them don't actually have a problem with rabies and this list doesn't make a great deal of sense because that was the reason why the list is purported to have been made in the first place.

Oddly enough (or intentionally), Mexico is missing from the list and there are a lot of countries that ARE on the list that have much better animal control and animal-welfare programs in place than that country does (no offense to anyone in Mexico out there, of course.)

We don't have a lot of clout in the industry, but the Soi Dog Foundation does and was recently recognized by the U.K. and the Royal Family as being an exemplary charity organization on a global scale.

Won't you please take a moment to sign the petition they have organized? It only takes a moment and you can find it here. This particular petition only asks for revision towards Phuket, where the Soi Dog Foundation is located, but there needs to be attention drawn to how much this new ban to the USA is going to negatively affect the animal adoption process for agencies all around the world just like ours if it isn't.

As always I want to ask everyone to adopt, not shop for pets and to volunteer your time, money, or both to your local animal welfare or animal rescue operation. Every little bit of help counts more than you think!
